After viewing the Crown Jewels it was on to the Royal Palace (pretty sparse), the Great Hall and the Scottish National War Memorial (so cool).
FROM RICK STEVES re: ROYAL PALACE:
Scottish royalty lived here only when safety or protocol required it (they preferred the Palace of Holyrood house at [...]
When we arrived in Edinburgh the sky was cloudy and overcast, but nice.
By the time we hiked up the hill and through the narrow “close” to the Royal Mile it was drizzling.
But by the time we had walked up to the very top – to Edinburgh Castle – it was raining. Hard. [...]
Returning to our Scotland adventures
I love cities. I love how much there is to see and do in cities!
So Tuesday morning we got up and left pretty early to have as much time as possible in the city.
We piled in the 2 cars around 7a or 730a and drove [...]
After visiting Stirling Castle and the nearby cemetery … by this time it was far too late to go on to Edinburgh so we headed home.
This time Kevin drove the car with GPS and Mom and Dad rode with Andrew and me.
Now, I’m pretty good at reading maps. Without the GPS to [...]
After Stirling Castle …we walked a *little* bit down the hill to the cemetery at the Church of the Holy Rude.
The church of the Holy Rude dates from 1129, founded as the parish church of Stirling.
King James VI was crowned King of Scots here in 1567 (Mary Queen of Scots’ son). This [...]
Once we finally got to the castle … we had bathroom breaks and postcard shopping and ticket buying.
Completely out of the blue and as a surprise, Dad bought the entrance tickets for all six of us.
And not just entrance tickets, but an “Explorer’s Pass” for ₤25 each, giving us entrance to 3 [...]
Kevin makes friends everywhere.
He arrived in Edinburgh about 3 or 4 days before the rest of us and spent all that time in the city by himself.
He went to some pubs and some Fringe festival shows….. and along the way he made some friends.
Including 2 guys from California! Jesse and Richard [...]
Monday – August 15
I had on the tentative itinerary that we would spend both Monday and Tuesday in Edinburgh.
But (of course) once we were all together in Scotland, by dad decided he wanted to go somewhere that I hadn’t fit into the itinerary.
I hadn’t even considered Stirling when I was planning [...]
{the following words and photos are all Andrew’s}
I tried to keep in mind which turn I had made as not to get lost, but I purposefully took the smallest roads I could find. Just to test my driving skills and get ready for the week of driving ahead of me. Its’ one thing [...]
{the following are all Andrew’s words and photos about how he spent Sunday}
We woke up Sunday morning prepared to spend the day driving around the lower Highlands. Amy was feeling sick after her shower though, so since we had two cars we wold the other 4 to take one car and head out [...]
… and now comes the saddest part of our Scotland vacation: I got sick.
I don’t know if it was what I ate, or something about the heat in the plane, or what … but Saturday afternoon I was sick, and Sunday morning I didn’t feel any better at all …
[...]
{The following is journaling from Andrew}
Anybody that knows me knows that I love music. It’s an obsession and it’s my life. I hate to not be listening to music, especially if I’m driving. I like that if I hear a song when I’m driving that in the future it will act as a [...]
When we arrived on Friday, I read in the check-in materials that we needed to turn the water heater on. Every single outlet and appliance had an on/off switch – including the water heater.
So, since there would be 6 of us showering, I turned on the water heater ASAP Friday night.
But then [...]
Driving back to Moness Resort from Pitlochry…. Andrew and I in the Mercedes…
Andrew and I got veggies for salad and a few more veggies for later in the week.
We got bread and butter so Andrew could have toast, a long with some [...]
So, while I napped in the car, my mom went shopping and the other 4 walked to the distillery … and it must have been quite the hike because they all 4 came back with muddy shoes.
While still in Pitlochry, we decided to find a [...]
