Andrew’s brother Daniel was in town for a week. … and during that time ALL the Schuberts were able to get together Saturday night.

Daniel visiting from Chicago!

Daniel has lived in Chicago since January 2011 … and has only been able to come home to visit a couple times. And NEVER since Joey was born!

Bad uncle.

But he came home in January (2013) for a week!

Andrew was so happy :)

I mean all of the family was happy, but Andrew and Daniel have a special bond :)

GBR 009

Daniel was in town for about a week and stayed at our house most of that time. A couple mornings he was barely awake by the time I left for work at 1:30p

And one other morning he started doing yardwork in our backyard. Because it was a “nice day”

On the Sunday D was in town, he and Andrew went hiking with Jenae and several of their friends…

Again with the “nice day”

Mostly, Andrew just was goofily happy all week … until Daniel left.

DANIEL: Come back from Chicago so Andrew can be happy again!!

Sunday night dinner party

…. although, can you really call it a dinner party when we have to eat in shifts because the grill won’t hold all 9 steaks and we only have 5 dining room chairs…. ?

…. and if Andrew and I have to quickly do dishes after dinner so we have enough clean forks for dessert… ?

details, schmetails….

A week or so ago, Andrew and I had some family and friends over for a little dinner.

It started with Andrew and me and Kaitlin and Joe …. and ended up being 11 people invited (7 were able to come)…

Andrew has been really into perfecting his grilling technique. Steaks from Jim’s Fallbrook Market (a local place we need to blog about), slightly flavored with Santa Maria seasoning and a few drops of soy sauce.

I prepped some sliced watermelon, roasted potatoes and grilled onions and peppers ….

Angela and Devo brought chips and salsa, and (not pictured) Kaitlin brought a green salad and dessert.

I can’t believe I didn’t get photos of the dessert – but honestly, I’m kind of surprised I got any pictures at all once people got here!

Guests include:

  • Daniel and Jenae : Although Daniel was seriously sick and wore sunglasses the whole night because his eyes were swelling shut. Poor kid.
  • Kaitlin : Joe was too busy studying
  • Chris and Kaylah : Chris is Andrew’s cousin who moved to SoCal from Idaho almost a year ago
  • Angela and Devo : I love them. The end.

We kind of just spent the night cooking and chatting and eating and laughing ….

Good friends and good food….

And then, later that night, Chris and Kaylah and Angie and Devo and Team Schubert played Traveling Pictionary. Which is obviously the best game ever.

SO fun!

We love having people over …. I can’t wait til we have a house with more room … .

…. and enough dining room chairs :)

Sunday with Daniel and Jenae

Daniel came back in town for a couple weeks …

He took the train from Chicago to L.A. over a couple days (sounds like fun!), so we’ve been trying to hang out with him as much as possible (obviously, since he’s awesome).

The Sunday afternoon/evening before Memorial Day we had Daniel and Jenae over so Andrew could practice his grilling technique….

2 inch filets from Jim’s Fallbrook Market. …. I love that place.

Using Andrew’s new(ish) meat thermometer

After dinner we watched some Ghost Adventures then headed out to (our favorite) Menchies!

We actually took our Menchie’s over to The Copper Bucket.

That place deserves its own post, for sure, but it’s this little hole-in-the-wall bar that Andrew goes to to play 50-cent darts with his co-workers!

My first time playing and I *almost* won….. Kind of.

Any points I made were fully by accident. … I can’t actually throw a dart where it’s supposed to go!

Relaxing nights like this make me wish we had a house with a backyard to host some get-togethers ….

Great Dane Pub, WI

After a visit to the Capital and singing some protest songs, Liz, Harvey, Daniel and I headed down the street to the Great Dane Pub & Brewery to sample some of their delicious brews. We drank beer that was brewed downstairs from the bar and played a game of shuffleboard. Daniel and I won by a couple points.

Holga images: Andrew in Chicago

I made Andrew take a camera to Chicago with him …. so he took my Holga.

The white, plastic, kind of toy camera …. And unfortunately I haven’t really been thinking straight and the film he took was not so hot. I’m not sure the extreme blurriness of these images is Andrew’s fault.

Here are some highlights from the 3 rolls of film Andrew took in Chicago and Wisconsin …. You’ll have to ask him if you have questions ….

Lake Mendota, WI

Here is a video of frozen Lake Mendota, one of two lakes that define the isthmus which Madison, WI was built upon. The other is Lake Menona (which I did not visit). I don’t recall ever looking out onto a frozen lake before….and it was so cold (at least for me, and I was wearing 2 jackets and a scarf wrapped around my head)! I also felt the pull of the lake asking me to attempt to walk out to the center of it. However, I did not want to die so I did not walk onto the frozen water.

Tour of The Spot, Chicago IL

Here is a tour of Daniel’s apartment. Art Ensemble of Chicago playing on the turntable in the background. I’ll post a couple more videos in the next few days.

Farewell breakfast with Daniel

So, Andrew’s brother Daniel now lives in Chicago.

Because he is awesome.

He moved to Chicago to go to school. Left mid-January.

We miss him a lot …. Andrew has already started selecting things to mail in a care package …

A couple days before Daniel left for Chicago, we headed up to Santa Clarita to do breakfast with him and the rest of the family.

I took my new video camera and got some footage!!

I’ll warn you now, it was noisy in the restaurant, so don’t expect crystal clear sound …. also, when I was filming the other side of the table was backlit so the exposure is not always correct. Or in focus. But I’m learning.

The first video – about halfway through is Julie talking about Daniel leaving.

The second video is Daniel talking about his move. With my leading questions, since he is not a super talkative boy….

Daniel is so cute …. he cracks me up. More video here.

Love you Daniel!! We’re super proud of you …..

Andrew is planning on going out in March!

NYE with Daniel and Jenae

I love staying in on New Year’s Eve.

In general, I think the holiday itself is a bit overrated and I’d much rather have friends over to my place so I don’t have to drive anywhere with all those crazies late at night.

So – New Year’s Eve – we were kind of surprised and excited that Daniel and Jenae didn’t have any other plans and came down to the Valley to hang out with us!

And watch *awful* Kung-fu movies. I actually spent a good chunk of the night working on L&R Blog Party posts (um, yes, last minute) …. but they had fun with the movies.

Andrew heard of a new way of prepping hamburgers so we thought we’d try it …

Below: ground beef soaking in beer

Daniel played with Andrew’s (now broken) helicopter

Andrew and I tried valiantly to save the ground beef …. too much beer … then we added more ground beef … then crushed saltine crackers.

And the whole time trying to mix it up it was FREEZING cold (since the beer came right out of the fridge)

Plus we were instructed to put a pad of butter in the middle of the hamburger patty ….

It did NOT work out.

The poor things just crumbled to pieces.

We even tried cooking them on the stove because the hamburger patties kept falling apart through the cracks in the grill.

And even once we got them cooked (even though they looked awful) …. they tasted like beer.

Luckily – Daniel and Jenae were heroes and went out to get re-inforcements… .

More ground beef to make non-fancy, completely edible NORMAL hamburger patties.

What a surprise, Andrew fell asleep during the movie ….

Happy New Year!

Nice, low-key, at home evening with people we love!

Tonight. Daniel is in town.

tonight Andrew and Daniel (brother in law) and I are heading out to the Paper Heart … it sounds like it should be a scrapbooking store, but it’s not … to see one of my favoritest bands play — Obadiah Parker … check out their website … if you live in the area, come by the SubCulture Cafe, tomorrow night where they will also be playing …

Today was a rotten rotten day at work … for numerous reasons which need not be elaborated … but, then I did a good deed by taking my friend Eddie to get a car battery (stupid mustang).

… and then I picked up Daniel from the airport … that kid always makes me laugh … [photo courtesy of Melissa Jill Photography] … and we got some Del Taco!! — Chicken soft tacos w/ extra secret sauce … fantastic … there needs to be more Del Tacos in AZ …

Then I come home and there’s a brand new scrapbooking magazine waiting for me! … CK … ah … the joys of scrapbooking … problem is looking through a mag always makes me want to scrap … and I can’t at the moment (between out of town guests and homework, I can’t really make the mess) … sigh. ….

BUT! I am scrapping on Sunday … w/ my monthly group … ‘scrappy happy’ or ‘scrap it’ or whatever we’re calling ourselves … i don’t even know. … anyway … our monthly date is this Sunday … for lots of hours — I’m thinking 5 or 6 — and I already have my crate full of Disneyland pics … honeymoon pics … mmm .. . lovely disneyland … it’ll be wonderful … can’t wait to post what i’ve done … Disneyland pics are always SO happy and so cheerful and so full of color and love … and honeymoon/Disneyland pics must be even better … and Christmas/Disneyland/honeymoon/Disneyland’s 50th anniversary must be even better than that! … . but maybe I’m biased … we’ll see. ..

And I had a brilliant idea for a scrapbook album … not exactly my idea, …. I kind of stole it/morphed it from Elsie Flannigan … she created an album, and posted it on 2peas of her Basic Grey Be Bold contest submission (I think she got an honorable mention) … and I LOVE it … the first page is a large pic of she and her husband, and in white pen over the pic she wrote a letter to their future children/grandchildren … and the album is basically so their descendants can kind of see into their life as a young couple … pages about where they like to go to dinner, and nicknames for each other … very inspiring …

so, I thought, I could do a similar album for me and andrew … I’m thinking, a title page … “schubert family, est. 2005″ and other random pages … like my slipper blog from a few weeks ago … and a page about drinking cider … and another about how we often just sit in the same room and read for hours … things like that that really, in a physical way, manifest our relationship, and who we are together … I’m very excited to get started …

we’re having lasagna for dinner before the show … smells like it’s done!
