Saturday plans : work work work

I kind of love my Saturdays "off" when Andrew is at work all day .... I spend half the time working on my various projects and business and the other half the time lolling around being indulgently lazy.

spring cleaning

In preparation for our upcoming move (details to come) I have been doing a little spring cleaning …
What is it about the weather this time of year that makes me want to throw out everything I own in the name of minimalism and simplicity?
I don’t know, but it certainly feels really good to fill up a box this size with clothes to get rid of …. (picture large enough to hold 12 rolls of paper towels)
note: about 1/3 of the box is skirts that are too big for me since ...

Grammy Museum in Los Angeles

Sunday we went to the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles …. Wow. Seriously. We planned on around an hour or so to see the Elvis at 21 photography exhibit (there til March 28), but we could have easily spent all day at the museum.
Why didn’t anyone tell me!!?

I definitely want to go back to the Grammy Museum and spend more than an hour. You could make this an all-day event. Especially as it’s on the campus of L.A. Live. Go to an early lunch, and then spend the whole afternoon ...

Tiny apartment

We’re signing a new lease on Friday.
More about that later.
But before we head out, I thought we could take a minute and look at the pros and cons of living in this tiny apartment.

PRO: Very low rent. Very. As in, we would be OK even if one of us lost our job.
CON: Rent has dropped even more since we moved in, so we’ve pretty much been paying more than market price the last few months.
PRO: Close to Andrew’s work
CON: Also very close to the main house and landlord. Where a ...

LA Times Travel show – Rick Steves

Are you tired of hearing about Rick Steves? Sorry. This post is about how we got to see Rick Steves speak for 2 hours at the L.A. Times Travel Show.
Here’s what I love about Rick Steves:

He’s smart.
He’s opinionated.
He’s not afraid to say what he REALLY thinks (even if it offends potential customers) {which actually makes good business sense}

Love it.
I’ve listened to a couple years of archives of his weekly podcasts (until tragedy struck), so I’m familiar with a lot of his talking points.
But that sure doesn’t compare to seeing him ...

LA Times Travel show – the main floor

Did you know that the Los Angeles Times hosts a Travel show every year?
I didn’t …. until this year.
It was incredibly crowded and busy, and full of people trying to sell you things. But SO INTERESTING.
There was snorkeling and lassoing and surf lessons and golfing. There was an old greek man giving away alcohol and a booth where you could have your photo taken in cowboy or indian garb. There was an African musician. There were 2 (2!) booths giving away massages.
And piles and piles of paper with pretty photos, ...

currently in love with Sandra Juto’s photography
oh my goodness … too cute
I find the computer-centered culture shift (in the western world) over the last 10-20 years fascinating. Exhibit A
how to be idle this weekend
I’ve saved all my high-school t-shirts (choir, drama, speech, etc) with the plan to make them into a quilt one day. It’s probably more realistic for me ...

The Schuberts go house hunting (part 5)

I bet you’re all wondering what we’re still doing in this tiny apartment and when we’re going to be tired of it.
Done. Tired of it.
Here’s the latest update in our house-hunting adventure.
As of June 14 when we moved into our current place we had about enough for a decent downpayment (about 10%) in savings for the house.
My grand plan was to spend the next 6-9months furiously saving $$ so we had another several thousand.
Using the base as a down payment and also having enough saved for closing costs and some ...
