The Garmin Girl

I need GPS.

I don’t drive to new places all that often, but when I do I inevitably have a hard time finding the streets/exits I need to turn on.

I hate Google Maps. It always confuses me.

Luckily, I think I have a *decent* sense of direction, so even when I KNOW I’ve missed my turn (too late to do anything about it) I can usually figure it out.

Usually.

But it would be so much easier if I had a GPS system.

So, when we went to San Francisco earlier this year we borrowed Julie’s Garmin GPS.

If you’ve never used one – they are so fun to play with!

It talks to you, and you can change the language, gender, accent of the voice. Pretty neat.

Julie keeps hers on a British woman’s voice.

She calls it the “Garmin Girl”

As in “The Garmin girl told me to get on the 101 all the way.” …. or … “Find out from Garmin girl where the closest gas station is.”

On our drive to San Fran, since we essentially knew where we were going, Andrew and I WILLFULLY DISOBEYED Garmin Girl.

Gasp! No!

Yes, my friends. It’s true.

We *got off the freeway* … (I know, I know) … and we drove through a small town.

And the whole time Garmin Girl is saying “Recalculating” and telling us to make a U-turn.

“Recalculating” and telling us where the nearest freeway on ramp is

“Recalculating” you dumb idiots you’re STILL GOING THE WRONG WAY

It was pretty hilarious :)

I think it is so fun to mess with the Garmin Girl because, as children of the 80s, Andrew and I are quite used to playing electronic/video games against the computer and LOSING.

That and the constant threat from Hollywood that one day robots and computers will be intelligent enough to take over the world.

Making the Garmin Girl mad by not following her directions is our one little revenge.

My parents have a TomTom. I like changing the instructions to Spanish to practice my skills.
