I was not built for late nights

25 February 2010 by Amy 5 Comments

I have been on my current sleeping schedule for almost 2 years – and I still cannot stay awake late at night.

Essentially, because my “day job” has me at work until 11p, including driving home and a bit of winding down, I do not get to bed until midnight at the earliest.

Every night.

For the last 2 years.

And yet, night after night around 9p or 10p I feel sleepy and tired and actually take a short nap on my lunch break.

True story. There are these armchairs in the lobby-area of our suite. And they are about the right size/width for me to curl up in with my head rested against the back. I sometimes cover my eyes with a scarf or sweater. My face will get I’ve-been-sleeping lines. And my mascara will smudge.

A little 1/2 hour power-nap.

And then I have to go back to work for a couple hours.

This happens …. about once per week.

What does this tell me? That I am not and cannot be a night owl. I was not built for late nights. My body naturally wants to be asleep when it is dark (and wake up with the sun). If 2 years isn’t long enough to convince my brain to stay awake until midnight, then nothing will.

So.

As soon as I have the chance to change my schedule – I think my ideal sleeping would be 10p to 6a. ….

I know it makes me a nerd, but I really really can’t wait for that change …..  Someday.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I had a ‘day job’ for about 9 months. Typical 9-5 kind of deal. I could NEVER wake up in the morning.

My body likes to stay up late.

I would rather be like you. I get nothing done.

I’m not sure what I am….a little of both. But I do tend to get my tired eyes on at about 8pm, so maybe a early bird……hmmmmmm.

I think I’m pretty flexible actually. I’m good at getting on a different schedule when I need to. At different times in my life I’ve worked very early morning shifts without too much of a problem and I’ve worked late night shifts without issue too.

I wish I could just not have to sleep much at all though. Because I could be a morning or a night person and would really like to be both if that whole needing sleep thing didn’t get in the way.
