Last weekend when we were … in that part of the state …. We stopped in San Luis Obispo to visit the California mission there.
Based on the amount of change that we had, we were in town for only about an hour. $1.25.
I want to be able to say that I’ve been to all the California missions. I’ve been to San Fernando (4th grade), Santa Barbara (4th grade) and now San Luis Obispo.
I love the California Missions.
I love the whitewashed walls against the red tile roofs against the gorgeous California blue sky. Even in January.
I love California and I love the history.
I love that these old old old buildings are still being preserved. Because there’s not much old stuff in CA. Relatively speaking.
The San Luis Obispo Mission is interesting to me … it’s pretty much RIGHT in downtown SLO.
We parked on the street and wandered into the back garden ….
We walked around to the front of the building … .the gift shop and “museum” … the chapel entrance. … the college-age boys taking photo/video of themselves jumping up 6ft walls and over 8 steps at a time.
We walked through the museum … which was …. pretty decent for a museum with no entry fee. But otherwise kind of sad. There was little to no information about the the items that were in the museum. The little labels that they had were just printed/cut out on normal printer paper. Which is probably not acid-free. Sitting directly on top of a 100+ year old photo.
Made me a little sad.
The chapel was pretty cool though …. it’s in the shape of an L.
The photo below is just about 1/2 the chapel. The other half is on the right, out of site …. I could almost imagine this place full .. full of dirty, local native americans and Spanish peasants brought up from Mexico to work at the Mission … right?
But, San Luis Obispo is kind of a gorgeous place ….
You can check out the Mission’s own Virtual Tour, too.
Does anyone have a FAVORITE mission? I love the Santa Barbara mission so far.

Your link to parcour was so interesting! I had never heard of that before. Beautiful pictures of the mission.
We went to the mission in Carmel a few years ago with Kevin and Erin. It was pretty cool too. They’re all so unique. It would be hard to pick just one.
Did you know that each one is supposed to be one day’s walk from the next one?
gorgeous photos!
I know of at least one of my sorority sisters who got married in the SLO mission. I do find the L shape interesting . . . I can’t remember any other Catholic church/mission being shaped like that. I lived in SLO for four years and only ONCE did I ever go to the “back” garden–I forgot how pretty it is.
SLO is beautiful. That was one of my three reasons for going to school there (the other two reasons being it was “far enough, but not too far away from home” and “not too expensive.”
