Thanksgiving 2009

Thanksgiving is such a great holiday, isn’t it?

No obligations, no gifts, no guilt.

Just a day of relaxing and eating. …. really – it’s all about the food.

mmmm …. and such good food.

I know EVERYONE has their own version of what is ‘traditional’ for Thanksgiving. … and everyone’s menu is different.

I support it. Traditions are what make holidays special. As long as I can have turkey and mashed potatoes/gravy, I’ll be happy.

Andrew and I brought our crockpot + apple juice, spices, caramel and whipped cream for hot apple cider (pictured above) …. one of my favorite holiday season drinks…..

Julie made the turkey using a recipe she found that called for slow-cooked, breast side down turkey for MOST of the time, then at the end, you turn it right side up and cook it at a higher temperature. Benefits of the tender, juicy upside down cooking plus it looked pretty …..

love love love turkey …. especially on Thanksgiving.

Andy had his traditional ‘nap in front of the television’ …. snoring when I took this pic ….

The menu was as follows (names in parens indicate the cook/chef/helper):

  • Turkey (Julie)
  • Mashed Potatoes (Amy, Andrew)
  • Stuffing (Julie)
  • Gravy (Julie)
  • Ambrosia salad (Amy, Andrew)
  • Sweet Potatoes (Julie, Andrew)
  • Jello (Julie)
  • Green-bean casserole (Andrew, Amy)
  • Cranberries (Julie)
  • Apple crisp (Julie)
  • Pumpkin Cheesecake (Costco)

I *think* that’s it …. that’s enough for 5 people, don’t you think?

Oh, yea …. just 5 people this year …. seemed pretty quiet after the 8 people last year ….

I *may* have put too many marshmallows on the sweet potatoes and they over-flowed into the oven. ….

I also *may* have made enough mashed potatoes for about 15 people …

Tripod-supported family photos. ….. it would be nice if we could make this a tradition ….

The light was better in the front of the house, but we did these in the backyard so the dogs could be in them …. .you see how well that worked.
