Bed Shopping

28 November 2009 by Andrew 4 Comments

So, for the past couple of weeks Amy and I have gone bed shopping.  We’ve never owned a new bed together.  Not since we’ve been married.  When Amy moved to Arizona our co-worker, Matt, gave her a hand-me-down kingsize bed.  I think it was a hand-me-down to him, which makes it doubly so for Amy.  And maybe triply so when Amy and I got married a few years later.  Well, anyway, this bed is old and not so awesome.  As we’ve been bed shopping, Amy kept talking about how we need a bed that we can make forts in.  She wanted a four-poster bed because obviously it would be easier to build a fort with those posts all ready to hang blankets and “Keep Out” signs from.  I was being all-business and saying we should just get a simple bed (I should remember to always listen to Amy whenever she gets that mischievous Anne Shirley look in her eye) blah blah blah blah blah.  I am such a drag sometimes.  But then I had this brilliant idea about bunkbeds.  Why not get a kingsize bunkbed, with a queensize on top?  That way we would have all the space we needed on the bottom for sleeping, and up top we could put a dining room table or a couch and a television or a television and a bunch of video game consoles.  I mean, we have all this vertical space that we aren’t using if we buy a simple bed frame that sits low, it’s just a waste.  Well,  I guess they don’t really make bunkbeds for adults that are king & queen and you can have video game tournaments on top….so we bought a nice simple king frame from Crate & Barrel and a mattress from Sit & Sleep.  I think we can still make forts with this bed.  We’re definitely gonna try it.

Currently Listening to:  The CarsThe Cars (1978) LP

The Cars - The Cars

Wow, how many great songs does this debut record have?  “Just What I Needed”, “My Best Friend’s Girl”, “Bye Bye Love”, “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”, “Good Times Roll” ……I swear if I didn’t know that Roy Thomas Baker produced this record (he also did Queen’s masterpieces as well) I would think that Todd Rundgren had a hand in it, listening to the gorgeous melodies, maybe that’s why he went on to front the Cars when they reunited a couple years ago

Congrats on the bed grown-ups! Too bad about the lack of grown-up bunkbeds. If you were handy you could build a loft bed like William is.

And thanks! Now I have My Best Friend’s Girl stuck in my head which would be fine except that I don’t really know the lyrics, so I’m all, “dancin’ neath the starry skies, hum hum hum hum huuummmm, she’s my best friends girl, and she used to be mine!”

what do you mean by mischievous Anne Shirley look?

    Who’s Anne Shirley?

O.k., you’re going to think I’m copying, but I’ve actually been thinking about doing this for several years. Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn used to have a picture of a bed with beautiful white sheers hanging from the ceiling around it which made a sort of canopy. I LOVE the idea! Not quite as private as a fort, but kinda the same idea. I tried to find the pic, but I can’t. Here are a few other pictures that kind of give you the idea of what I’m talking about…so…you can still make forts with a regular bed! Yea!
