Andrew’s Travel Expectations

24 October 2009 by Andrew 5 Comments

Hi.  I think a lot of the upcoming posts will be about our recent trip to Italy.  This will probably be one of the few from my perspective, since Amy is better at writing and takes way better photos.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Italy.  I don’t have a lot of experience with long distance vacations to foreign destinations.  When I was a kid my family went camping every year in the same location.  It was wonderful, real camping (bathing in the creek etc.) and I always looked forward to it, but it’s a lot different compared to Amy’s family vacations to DC and a bunch of other places she’s constantly showing off that she’s been to.  Italy kind of crept up on me.  I meant to be helpful and lend a hand during the planning stages, and learn a ton about Rome and Florence so I’d know what we were going to see  but I didn’t.  I meant to learn Italian (at least more than the handful of phrases I knew when we landed there)….but somehow by the night before the trip I hadn’t really done any of these things.  Lucky for me, Amy is great at planning vacations and with Angela’s help she had come up with a great itinerary that would get us through the trip.

I also didn’t know how I’d feel in a foreign country, how I’d feel so far from the comforts of home and my records and internet and phones (we didn’t bring any of those 3 things, it was amazing).  But when we landed in Italy and after customs we got to the first B&B I don’t think I ever wanted to leave.  It was breathtaking and frightening and beautiful and so much different from the US.  To be in a place completely surrounded by thousands of years of history and for all of it to be so tangible…..I just want to share that feeling with everyone I care about.  I can’t wait to go back, and I can’t wait to travel more with Amy.  And help more with the planning of the trips.  I think that now that I have a better idea of what it’s like to travel for a week away from home I’ll know what to expect more and be able to focus on the planning stage.  And Amy’s personality is very different from mine, which makes her the perfect travel companion for me.  She’s so level-headed and is great at planning, where I’m more spur of the moment and it’s-ok-if-our-plans-get-changed kind of a person.  I’m the worst.

I seriously can’t wait until Amy starts posting pictures from the trip.  It’ll be the best.  I’m all set to move to Italy, but Amy says that we have a lifetime of travel ahead of us and I shouldn’t just move to the first place we go.  I’m sure she’s right, but still I can dream about moving to Italy.

I always want to move to wherever I’m vacationing too! I think I just love the idea of living in a new place where I don’t know anyone. Although, I know that I probably wouldn’t actually want to move away from friends and family. I usually settle for the idea of having vacation homes. So far I will be summering in South Africa, wintering in New Orleans, Springing in New York, and taking the occasional long weekend in Palm Springs. I really need to travel more. Mexico!

Andrew, It’s so fun to see this trip thru your eyes. I’m so glad that you are liking to travel, because I think it would break Amy’s heart if you didn’t enjoy it. Terry and I share our roles. Usually, I handle all the details of getting us where we’re going and making reservations for air, car, hotel, etc. Then Terry does a lot of the research on what we should do/see when we get there. Of course, he likes history and nature so those are his first focuses. We both come up with ideas of where we want to go, then work together to try to figure out what we have time for.

When I was in Germany for business I felt very similar. All I could think of was that I wished my family was there to share all the awesome history and architecture and adventure.

I also try to figure out how to move to all the places we visit…now I’ve decided that we just need to figure out how to live/work/travel in the hot months (5-6 months out of each year) so we can come back home to friends, family and church for part of every year.

I think I’m more of the “whatever happens, happens” kind of person whenever Daniel and I have a trip. I love spontaneity, so you’re not the worst travel planner. I think that that kind of attitude can make some of the best trips. Like when we took our road trip up to Idaho, we never knew how long we were staying in places or where we would stay that night we just went with our feelings and it turned out to be one of the best trips I’ve ever been on (but I love getting lost and finding wonderful things in the process). I blame this on Daniel though, whenever we are on a trip we never plan anything and just do what we are feeling for the moment and it always turns out incredible.
