I love tattoos. I think that once you get one you kind of get addicted to getting them. While I was getting my first tattoo I was already anticipating my next. I have 5 tattoos and plans to get a lot more. I have 2 matching tattoos with other
people; one on my wrist (pictured above) that is identical to it’s companion which Stacy has on her shoulder blade & one on my left leg which is a Dia De Los Muertos skeleton that Fernando has the same tattoo on his right shoulder but interpreted by a different artist so it looks slightly different.
I have a kind of throw away tattoo on my right shoulder. This was my second tattoo and I’m sure I just rushed into getting it done.
Also, my parents forbid me to get tattoos while I lived in the house….so of course I got 2 tattoos and tried to hide them from my parents, which didn’t work because the Guzzler saw one of them and I didn’t want to have to ask him to lie to my parents so I ended up telling them.
I also have Amy’s middle name tattooed on my right forearm with an anchor
and my wedding band tattooed on my ring finger.
I think a lot of people anticipate getting a tattoo that they feel like sums up who they are as a person, or they try to think of a symbol or whatever that will be a statement of what they are about. I completely disagree with that type of tattoo. I don’t think it’s possible to sum up an identity or personality in a tattoo (or a car, or possessions or clothes or a necklace etc). I think a tattoo can be reflective of a state of mind at a particular moment in a person’s life, or a particular interest or fad, or I think people will just get extremely generic tattoos just to get a tattoo or to be impulsive (tribal tattoos, sailor tattoos, butterfly tattoos etc.) I’m pretty sure I’m losing track of where I’m going with this so I’m going to apologize now for just being completely random.
My tattoos all mean something to me, but it might be something different depending on what day you ask me, or I might not be able to tell you, or it could be that I know it was impulsive to get a skull tattoo on my shoulder and I now think it’s kinda lame. But I don’t have plans to get any of them covered up with other designs. I do have plans to get more tattoos. I like the idea of having matching tattoos with my friends, maybe drawn by different artists so there are slight differences, I think my friend Maggie and I will get a matching tattoo sometime in the future. I have a giant robot tattoo idea, some bacon and eggs, a piece of toast wearing a cowboy hat. I really want to get a tattoo on my chest, but I know that Amy will say no to that idea….
why do I want to get tattoos? I don’t know, maybe I feel like it makes me look cool (because everyone knows that I’m not cool so I need something to help me), or maybe I’ve just listened to too much punk rock all my life so it just feels like a part of my life. I don’t often know what to say to people that tell me they want to get a tattoo but don’t know what type of design they could get that they could live with their entire life….you know what, just don’t get one then, i think you just know when it’s right, you get a certain nostalgia for a design that just tears your heart in a certain way….I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore, maybe all tattoos should make you a little bit sad for times that have passed and be a reminder for a specific day in your life.
also I kind of want to get a darkmark tattoo, but I’m sure amy will say no to that idea….

Man, I just looove tattoos! They are super addictive. This post really makes me want to get more tattoos and also write a post about my tattoos. We should get our matching tattoos really soon!
What’s a darkmark tattoo? I’m glad you get so much enjoyment out of them.
Sorry. I love you to death, and am so glad you’re part of the family, but I have to disagree. Tattoos do NOT make someone look “cool.”
I could say more, but I’m sure I’ve offended you enough already (although I can actually hear you doing that great laugh as you read what Uncle Ted just wrote!)
I think that’s my feeling about tattoos too…I think it’s all for the moment and what you feel during that time that can inspire a tattoo that you can look back on and remember what you were feeling during that time….i re-read that and I’m not sure it makes sense, but…I hope it does.
Do you know of any tatoo places to recommend that are in Ventura – San Luis Obispo (or anywhere in between)?
Fernando and I are getting matching Aquabats tattoos for our 3-year wedding anniversary coming up! So exciting
