Over the next several weeks I will be doing a feature I’m calling ‘Our inheritance’
As you may know, Andrew’s great-grandpa passed away a few months ago.
One of my biggest regrets is that Andrew and I never made the time to go record his stories. We’ve heard many of them (playing golf at Pebble Beach when it was only a couple dollars, playing baseball in a summer league against the L.A. NFL team), but never actually took the microphone over to record them.
When he died, and Andrew’s grandparents went through the house, we were gifted with lots of little household items that just breathe ‘old man’ — and I really mean that in the sweetest, most nostalgic way possible.
Papa was 91 (?) when he died and lived his life making smart money decisions. Which means he lived in a house that he bought in the early 1960s and barely changed in the subsequent years. Means he and his wife got a lovely big set of dishes (my guess is the late 60s or 1970s) and never needed to replace it. Means he had small, interesting curios all over his house and no need for new fangled technologies. …
And we were so lucky enough to come away with some of the things Papa kept in his life …
Really, I should say, these posts will mostly be showing off for Linda. But I hope the rest of you appreciate how lucky we feel to now be the owners of all these amazing vintage things that really feel like an inheritance.
Firstly…
We got these suitcases from Papa.
Aren’t they just gorgeous?
I’m going to guess late 60s or so (that orange!) … the handles are a little sticky, and who knows how long it’s been since they’ve been used.
But! Those stickers (legit), that stitching, Samsonite …. These things are going to be around for the long haul.
I haven’t decided yet if we will actually use them for luggage, or maybe just decor (holding my tablecloths in the guest room?) ….
… but just look!
The best part?
Papa’s initials -
which also happen to be Andrew’s initials:

I LOVE THEM!!
What a treasured piece of family history! And to think that Andrew has the same initials! Way cool.
I saw someone that used their vintage luggage for storage, and made the coolest hanging tags, that listed what was inside.
Love the idea of storing linens, tablecloths, etc.
Can't wait to see the rest!
LOVE THEM TOO! I would definitely NOT use them as luggage if you're flying. There's too much chance for them to get damaged or lost. I've seen suitcases stacked & used as end tables plus store things inside. Of course, you might want to put a piece of acrylic or glass on top so they don't get damaged by glasses and such, but they'd look great next to a comfy chair.
Here are some other ideas, but some are too drastic. http://www.poetichome.com/2009/01/19/repurposed-suitcases-from-filing-cabinets-to-tables/

Those are fantastic. I love period pieces.
those are amazing! Papa would be glad that his stuff is apperciated
Those suitcases are so fun and vintage. You could totally use them as a coffee table or end tables. They would look great in an eclectic living room.
