is this a new sales technique?

A week or so ago, Andrew and I were at home in the morning before going to work … watching a movie or some such.

Because we live with his parents, we live in a nice neighborhood. Where we would never otherwise be able to afford to live. Where every house has several NICE cars in front. Where you know the owners have money.

So, we’re at home and there’s a knock on the door. 2 other people are home, but Andrew is the one to answer it

[keep in mind, the way the floor plan is set up, if you're standing at the front door, you can't really see anywhere or anyone else in the house. Just the person who answered]

Andrew answers (I didn’t see any of this, only overheard it) and it’s this kid (like, 19 years old) with his inner-city lingo trying to get Andrew to buy a magazine or something.
Kid: Yea, man, I just moved to the area. I’m just trying start a business, support my family, youknowwhatI’msayin’?
Andrew: yea …
So, basically, one of those ‘fund raisers’ that really is a pointless waste of money. But clearly this kid thought he picked the right neighborhood and all these rich suburban people would feel sorry for him or something.
He tried to soften Andrew up, asking him what he did, where he worked (was kind of impressed when Andrew told him audio engineering and that, yes, he had worked with a hip-hop artist) … you know, all the usual sales tactics to try to get someone on your side, trusting you, etc.
This kid goes in for the close, “do you think you could help me out?”

Andrew politely declines, “No, thank you. I don’t have extra money spend right now. Sorry man.”
And then, the kicker. The secret sales weapon this kid had been waiting to pull out:
“Aw, come on. I know you go to the strip clubs.”
what? wait, did he really just say that?
Me, Andrew’s brother and Andrew’s mom are all in nearby rooms, out of sight, listening to Andrew be accused of something in order to get him to buy something
“C’mon, man. I don’t trust you,” laughing. “I know you go to strip clubs. Where are those $35 ones you took there last night? Which strip club is your favorite?”

So, I think you should try this tactic with your next prospective client at work
[eventually, Andrew convinced him that, no he does not spend money at strip clubs, and no he was not going to spend money on this kid either. It ended up with Andrew giving this "salesman" his card and maybe getting a phn call/email about Andrew recording him]

Lmao. That's pitiful, but hilarious. Thanks for sharing that :)

Yeah…I usually pull the strip club card on people when I am really pushing to sell something…because I know they totally go there and have those singles just hanging around.

When I heard that story I almost died from thinking about andrew and strip clubs and how he would probably be one of the last people in this world to be spending his sinlges on something like that. RIDICULOUS!

HA! I love those kids! It seems like I get them at my door no matter where I live! They are always soooo funny!

    Wow – strange!!!

You'll have to have Linda tell the story about the guy that came to her door the other night when a bunch of us girls were there.

Great story – I think I would have just laughed in his face.

But it makes me wonder: can he possibly have had ANY luck with this sales technique of his? We know that the non-club-goers (Andrew) don't fall for it. But is there some guy out there who said, "Aw shucks, you're right. Here, have the singles I was planning on using tonight"? I just don't see it as a very smart sales plan, no matter who the customer.

But I will say that from now on, I'll be looking at your "I-love-my-husband-so-much-but-he's-working-a-billion-hours" posts just a litte differently. Wondering…
