England – different than the U.S.

I thought I’d take one last day to do England pics …. and point out some of the things that are just different. Little minor things, that I’m sure British people never think about … but interesting.

First, I already told y’all about how there were cranes/scaffolding everywhere …. But I want to make sure you know I really meant EVERYWHERE:

E3-10

The ‘walk’ and ‘don’t walk’ guys at the crosswalks were a lot more …. fluid than we have. Less boxy/stiff …

Plus! A lot of the streets had a strategic median for pedestrians (so you didn’t have to hold up 2 directions of traffic when crossing) …

Plus, if you look on the ground, you see directions on where to watch for cars (‘<-- Look Left'. I suppose this is most valuable in places (like Trafalgar square) where more than 2 streets converge... E3-21

The ‘Exit’ signs were all green … and all with this running guy on them, and instead of ‘exit’ a lot of them say ‘Way Out’ ….. seems a lot more panicky (run! way out this way!) than our boring old ‘EXIT’ signs …

British money – first of all, I could be a much smarter shopper/traveler if I had a better grasp of the exchange rate. Oh well.

The problem I had w/ the cash in England is the coins are of similar size to U.S. cash, but different denominations …. ex: the dime-sized coin is (I think) 20pence. … and so on.

Hard to get used to.

Especially in just a couple days.

Plus, there is 1pnd and 2pnd coins (instead of the $1 bill we have) … which means that pretty much every time I broke a 20pnd note, I had a huge, heavy pocket full of change …

I would not be surprised if the 1pnd coins there get spent faster than the $1 bills here…

Lastly … this is interesting. No universal symbol for disability. … instead, the whole word, all capital letters lining the length of the parking space.

E5-68

Just interesting.

I think I prefer the symbol for disabled parking rather than just he entire word. Do they have Maternity parking spaces that say “pregnant” on them? I can’t wait to go and panic and think about zombies the entire time I’m there.

This is an interesting post. I’m glad you decided to do it. Good-bye England posts, I will miss you.

I can’t believe I did not take a picture of a “Mind the Gap” sign.

paying for public restrooms. most of which do not have toilet seats on them.

Not sure if you encountered this in England, but I can almost guarantee you will in Italy…

    It’s lovely.

Yeah, interesting the subtle differences in other countries. We just assume that everything will be like the states. I remember that there were several differences in Germany too. Like the windows that can open in two different directions and most of the windows don’t have screens. The bedding is different and the bathrooms too. I’m sure there was more but I’ve forgotten them.
