Christmas – 13 – Secret Santa

Secret Santa – basically just a game of chance.

Every year you commit to participate in a Secret Santa (or similar) gift exchange, always always thinking about whose name you are going to choose. It all builds up to that moment. That couple seconds that you put your hand in and pull out a slip of paper. Who will it be? What have I got myself into?

The actual shopping and gifting is kind of anti-climactic after that.

I’ve participated in Secret Santa activities ALL OVER the place … school, work, GCT. … we even ‘chose names’ for Christmas with my dad’s family a couple years…

But because of that – picking a name on a little piece of paper in a bowl or hat – it’s so risky you’re going to pick someone lame. Or intimidating. Or that you were planning on getting a gift for anyway.

Such a shame.

Sometimes you get lucky, I guess. And that’s always fun. When you pick the name of someone you really like and have a few good ideas for. You go out shopping right away. You can’t wait to give the gifts because they are so well-thought out. You really look forward to making this person’s holiday more special.

Sometimes you get unlucky. When you pick the name of someone you have never spoken to. Someone who is not even going to be present on the day of the group gift exchange. Someone who indicated that he/she would like for Christmas – a Target gift card. Nothing else listed.

You never know, I guess.

sometimes if all that’s listed is a Target Gift Card you can make your spouse go out and get it for you.
