guess what!
I’m going to have to get my passport soon because I actually have a reason to use it.
Andrew and I are going to Italy next year. Almost exactly a year from now, in fact.
I have been approved to take off time from work from 10/12/09 – 10/16/09. Counting weekends, minus travel time, that gives us about a week in Italy.
Most of you know, Andrew and I have always planned to go to Ireland for our ‘honeymoon.’ And it has just never happened. Because of school, because of new jobs, because of $$.
But for Italy, we don’t have any of those excuses. Ok, It’s going to be a lot of $$. But, one of our plane tickets will be paid for. And, this is what Christmas bonuses are for, right?
We are both ridiculously excited. So so so excited! Can you just imagine how many photos I’m going to take?
I need to talk to Angela about it, before we nail anything down. She’s been to Italy, and is going again in a couple weeks. I, of course, want her input before booking anything. Andrew: reminder, we should also ask Betsy about their trips.
I think, after a simple preliminary look at the map, I want to fly into one end of the country, spend a day each in a few different cities, and fly out of the other end of the country at the end of the week.
Naples, Rome, Florence, Venice
How does that sound?
If any of you have any suggestions, or tips, or links, or ideas about ANY of it – please email me or leave a comment.
Note: I am pretty sure I will be taking all my camera stuff as a carry on and run the risk of losing my clothes.
I feel like I have so much to read and learn. I want to know as much as possible about where I am going before I go. Ex. I have an Ireland travel guide I got from my grandmother that I have pretty much read cover-to-cover. Also, I am suddenly craving all that American, turn-of-the-20th-century literature about Americans abroad (Henry James, Room With a View, etc.). I should dig those out.
Do you think the library carries (up-to-date) travel materials?
This is what I have found online so far:
http://wikitravel.org/en/Italy
Already planning how to do blog posts that week (I think I will schedule them ahead of time, so I don’t have to take out time there to get on the internet).
Already planning how to scrapbook it (I think I will be taking SOO many pictures, it would be cost-prohibitive to get in all the good ones in the traditional way. Maybe blurb.com?)
So so so excited!

Seriously.
We can get together and spend a day planning.
I have about a dozen books…you can have as soon as I get back (November
and keep for a few months if you like.
I dont recommend Naples. Seriously. Ill let you know a bit more when we talk.
Oh! Rick Steves Rick Steves Rick Steves. I cant say it enough. He is all you need to know about travel. If you have Tivo or anyother recording device…do a Rick Steves and Italy search and record EVERYTHING that comes up.
If you dont….find him online @ the travel channel site.
Send me as many emails as you want. Ive spent 2 full years researching everything there is to know about Italy and I have info coming out of my ears.
OH! Netflix! Go through my old queue or do searches there…they have a ton of travel shows (again I suggest Rick Steves) and documentaries.
Love you!
yay Im so excited for you guys! Its going to be amazing!
Congratulations! How exciting! Can we come too? Well, I guess that’s not appropriate if it’s your honeymoon.
Dad will be jealous that you made it to Europe before him. Do you want me to check with Stefan on his dad’s villa for a night or so? I have no idea where it is.
Do you still have AAA? They may have some free info, but not sure.
Have to say Venice was my favorite city…make sure to do a gondola ride and see St.Marc’s basiclica. Florence was also great (see the David and Il Duomo). Pisa is only an hour or so train ride away from Florence, but I don’t recomend it because the only thing to see is the leaning tower…although the ride goes through the Tuscan countryside which is beautiful. If you’re going to Rome, i would recommend spending at least two days there because there is SO MUCH to see and you don’t want to rush it.
that’s my recomendations
I don’t have any books, but I do have plenty of pictures and lots of fun stories if we ever see eachother before you go!
It makes me want to go back!
I AM SO EXCITED!!!
I applied for my passport two weeks ago and it came in the mail yesterday… they are much better with the process now so it’s way fast.
